[轉貼] Some Advice for a Programmer-to-be

While You're in School

  • Improve your English
  • Build a strong and broad knowledge base on Computer Science
  • Focus first on Computer Science, not computer techniques -- learn technologies for the purpuse of helping you understand how CS knowledge is applied in problem solving, or how it is put to practical use
  • Spend your precious time studying, rather working (excessively) part-time
  • Learn teamwork -- explore abilities; cover deficiencies; prefect through debates; practice through project

To Prepare for a Bright Future

  • Understanding yourself; your abilities and limitions -- the latter is much harder to know
  • Be honest with yourself
  • Cover all aspects of a problem, and be thorough
  • Train yourself for clear and logical thinking; learning to arrange and state your throughts logically
  • Pay attention to details with your design
  • Appreciate the importance of program testing
  • Remember you are an engineer -- learn to optimize under time, resource, and other constraints, to reach a feasible solution
  • Take initative and be aggressive, but don't ever stab others on the back
