Gate Arrays

  A matrix of identical components which has passed all the stages in the chip fabrication process except the final interconnection (metal) stage.

 In short, it is a mask programmable component.

 Advantage:

     (1) A system house can have an effective full custom capability without the need for a full processing capability.

     (2) 1550 gate CMOS gate chip can be 5 mm x 5 mm.

 Disadvantage:

      Chip size 25% larger than a custom design.
